Norwegian Stunt Coordinator for “Monster” NRK – Bringing International Expertise to Norwegian TV.
When it’s a matter of providing jaw-dropping action sequences, experience is what counts—especially when you have the responsibility of giving life to a cliffhanger thriller like “Monster”, the hit Norwegian TV drama series produced by NRK. As an international stunt team and stunt coordinator, we were thrilled to provide the action for this high-octane production. Stuntcoordinated by Stuntcoordinator Deni Jordan, our crew, European Stuntteam, was required to deliver everything from realistic fight scenes to heart-stopping shootouts, all with the utmost safety standards.
Here, we shall provide a closer look at the work we accomplished on “Monster”, with emphasis on what we had to overcome, specifically the tough conditions of filming in Norway, and how we managed to deliver the action scenes that have viewers on the edge of their seats.
One of the most enjoyable aspects of shooting “Monster” were the series numerous and complex shootout scenes. They were not traditional gunfights—each and every one required elaborate planning so the Norwegian stunts would be thrilling but also entirely safe. As TV series our stunt coordinator who is based out of Norway, it was vital we worked extremely closely with production personnel to have all shootout scenes as realistic as they would be liable to film without endangering the performers’ safety in any way.
Use of firearms in fight scenes requires not only precision but a full understanding of safety protocols. Our Norwegian stunt team along with our Norway stuntcoordinator Deni Jordan were tasked with creating these high-risk shootouts, pushing the choreography to the limit so the actors could seem to be in the midst of the action, yet protecting them. The real challenge was keeping the performances looking dynamic and smooth on camera, while maintaining an high level of security for the all actors in the scenes.
In addition to shootouts, Deni Jordan also stuntcoordinated and fight choreographed the series’ fight scenes. All required close attention, with realistic movement and the right pacing to make the action suspenseful and believable. We blended street fighting, martial arts, and careful choreography to keep the action fast but realistic, ensuring the actors’ performances were balanced with the story’s intensity. Starring cool actor Jakob Oftebro and Ingvild Bygdnes and directed the talented director Anne Sewitsky (Presumed Innocent).
Defying the Elements: Filming in Norway’s Severe Cold
Being a Norwegian Stunt Coordinator and filming “Monster” in Vardø, Norway, the country’s northernmost point, presented us with a unique challenge. With temperatures below zero and extreme winter conditions, our stunt coordinator in Norway and his team needed to develop innovative solutions to ensure the actors stayed warm and safe during filming extreme water scenes in near-ice conditions and furthermore having to of the older actors do a fight scene in the snowy locations totally nude. That scene posed several difficulties since we had to keep the actors warm while they did the norwegian stunts being nude in minus temperatures.
Also the scenes in cold water were a special challenge, particularly in the ocean, where the temperature was critically close to freezing. Safety was our top concern for the actors performing stunts in Norway in such conditions. In order to minimize the risks, we ensured the actors were highly protected and kept warm between takes, carefully regulating their exposure to the cold in order not to endanger them from hypothermia while still accomplishing the intense action the scenes required.
With 4-5 months of filming over winter, keeping the cast and crew in top condition was no easy feat, but one our experienced team was well placed to achieve. Despite the biting cold, we were able to film the high-octane sequences, making sure each scene was perfectly captured, while maintaining a high level of safety.
